No plates, safety violations trigger ripple of charges in Caledon enforcement blitz

Some truckers passing through Caledon, Ont., were not only bending the rules but also attracting attention for some pretty obvious reasons, police say.

In a recent traffic enforcement blitz conducted by Ontario Provincial Police, inspectors say they stopped three Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) from the same Bolton-based company after spotting them driving without any licence plates attached.

By the time the investigation wrapped up, police say each driver had been hit with three charges, while the company itself was facing nine.

Another traffic stop was initiated in the town when an automated licence plate recognition system detected a loaded dump truck with an improperly registered licence plate.

Officers say the driver ended up facing eight charges and the Brampton-based company operating the vehicle was charged with four more.

In a third stop, a commercial vehicle was observed by police on a road where trucks aren’t permitted. OPP say an inspection uncovered several additional violations, resulting in five charges against the driver and three against another Brampton-based company.

Officers took to social media to say these incidents are the latest examples of commercial vehicle enforcement throughout Caledon.

“Commercial drivers are reminded that 24/7 compliance with CMV safety requirements such as inspections, hours of service, secured cargo and the movement of dangerous goods is critical to keeping roads safe and forms part of commercial vehicle enforcement,” wrote police in a stern social media warning.
