New traffic lights to be activated this week at dangerous Innisfil intersection

Big Bay Point Road and 20th Sideroad in Innisfil have new and permanent traffic lights, a long-term plan to make the intersection safer.

New traffic lights are ready to be activated this week at a dangerous intersection in Innisfil, following a rise in reported crashes over consecutive years.

The Town of Innisfil says temporary signals at Big Bay Point Road and the 20th Sideroad are expected to go live Thursday, pending final testing and setup.

“InnPower was able to provide the electrical connection to the project earlier today. (Monday) Now that there is power available, there are a few remaining steps to complete the project, including the programming, testing, and activating the signal lights,” says the town.

Until the signals are fully operational, the intersection will continue to function as a two-way stop.

This move comes amid growing concern over collisions in the area. South Simcoe Police tell CTV News crashes have steadily increased, rising from four in 2023 to 11 in 2024.

Police say seven collisions were recorded as of July 2025.

Town officials state the temporary installation is an interim safety measure ahead of a larger reconstruction project estimated at $200,000. Plans for the corridor include permanent traffic signals, turning lanes, road widening, and a new multi-use path.

Installation of the permanent traffic lights will follow the temporary ones. Officials say the entire project is expected to be completed sometime in 2028.
