Man faces impaired driving charges after reversing into OPP cruiser, allegedly fleeing crash

An Orangeville man is facing charges related to impaired driving after colliding with a police cruiser while attempting to reverse in a residential neighbourhood.

On Friday, shortly after 11 p.m., provincial police responded to a fail-to-remain motor vehicle collision in the area of Sherwood Street.

Officers say they tracked down the suspect vehicle in Orangeville, and while attempting to get the driver’s attention he reversed directly into a fully marked police cruiser.

Officers reported signs of impairment and began an in-depth investigation.

As a result, a 38-year-old man has been charged with failure or refusal to comply with demand. Operating while impaired by alcohol and drugs, dangerous operation, failure to stop after an accident, driving while under suspension, and failing to properly wear a seat belt.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the courts at a later date.

Dufferin police remind motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. “Use a designated driver, taxi, rideshare, or public transit, or stay overnight. Even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can impair your judgment. In a split second, you could ruin your future, harm or kill others, and cause deep pain to those who love you,” concluded police in a Monday release.
