The City of Barrie says McKay Road East between Veteran’s Drive and Huronia Road will stay closed until the end of the year. The major road closed Nov. 27 and was originally set to reopen on Jan. 23 briefly and then close shortly after, but the City says the crews need to continue working without interruption so the work will be able to get done safely and efficiently. The City also says it will help to avoid the back-and-forth reopening and reclosing, causing unnecessary disruptions to motorists, pedestrians and residents in the area. The road is under construction while crews work on installing a new watermain and a new trunk sanitary sewer. The City says the project is set for completion in spring 2028. Detour signs remain in place to direct drivers around the closure. One detour goes from McKay Road West to Veteran’s Drive to Mapleview Drive West to Huronia Road to McKay Road East. The other detour is from McKay Road East to Huronia Road to Innisfil Beach Road to Veteran’s Drive to McKay Road West. The City is reminding motorists they can still drive from Veteran’s Drive up to the construction zone. The City is also reinforcing that the public is not permitted in the construction zone or anywhere on the road closure, including snowmobiles. Barrie transit routes and schedules are not affected.
