Lake Simcoe above seasonal water levels, conservation authority says

Water levels on Lake Simcoe are higher-than-average right now and continue to rise, according to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA).

The authority says Lake Simcoe is currently at 219.23 metres, about eight centimetres above the average annual high-water level for the season.

“Currently, the water level in Lake Simcoe is rising two to three centimetres per day and is expected to continue rising,” says the LSRCA.

More rainfall expected

Roughly 25 millimetres of rain fell across the watershed in the past 24 hours, with nearly 40 millimetres planned between Tuesday and Thursday.

The LSRCA says rainfall combined with water already moving through the system will continue driving lake levels upward.

“Flooding has been reported in some localized low-lying areas, including the Jackson’s Point and Ramara areas,” continues the LSRCA. “There is a high risk of dike failures in the Keswick, Kolbar and Bradford polders. Depending on wind conditions, there may be localized storm surge effects, leading to increased flooding.”

Melting ice and pile-ups

Some lake ice has already melted and remaining ice is expected to break up soon.

Municipalities and shoreline property owners in low-lying areas are being advised to prepare for potential flooding, including the possible need for sandbagging.

“Residents, especially in the historically flood-prone areas, are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their pets, and their property,” states the authority.

Officials say the shoreline watch “High Risk” remains in effect through April 27 or until conditions improve.

The LSRCA is one of 36 authorities across the province dedicated to protecting and managing water and other natural resources.
