Holiday scam awareness: Avoid becoming a victim

With the holiday season just around the corner, police are reminding seniors to stay alert, because while this time of year brings generosity and good cheer, it also attracts scammers looking to take advantage of trusting people.

The Nottawasaga OPP has teamed up with Contact Community Services to host a series of free scam awareness sessions aimed at helping seniors recognize, avoid, and report fraud.

Police say scammers often target seniors. Many scams are designed to create a sense of urgency or fear, whether it’s a fake call from a grandchild in trouble, a phony delivery notification, or an email claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Seniors are encouraged to be cautious about unsolicited calls or messages, especially those asking for payment through gift cards, e-transfers, or cryptocurrency.

The upcoming presentations will teach residents how to spot the warning signs of scams, what to do if they’ve been targeted, and how to report fraud to authorities. The sessions will also share examples of common holiday scams circulating right now.

The sessions are open to anyone 55 and older and will run through November in communities across the region.
