Holding off at the pump? Gas prices set to drop Wednesday in Barrie

Drivers have been on the gas price rollercoaster with prices expected to go back up tomorrow.

If you’ve been holding off at the pump, Wednesday might finally be your day to fill up. After weeks of stubbornly high prices, gas costs across Barrie are expected to drop.

Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, is advising drivers to stick it out one more day.

According to Gas Wizard, regular gas is projected to drop Wednesday to 165.9 cents per litre, down 12 cents overnight.

Premium is also set to fall by 12 cents to 195.9, while diesel could see the biggest break, with a 20 cent drop bringing prices to 217.9 cents per litre in Barrie.

“Not to buy yesterday, not to buy on Monday, but to wait until Wednesday to fill up,” said McTeague. “And that’s exactly what they’re doing today (Wednesday). Those who didn’t, well, I guess money’s no object.”

On Tuesday, drivers were paying roughly 177.9 cents per litre for regular, 207.9 for premium, and 237.9 for diesel.

For many in Barrie and surrounding areas, the difference could be enough to make waiting worthwhile.

“Fill up Wednesday and save, as markets aren’t certain of Trump’s assurances of negotiations with Iran,” McTeague hinted over social media, pointing to the overnight drop.

McTeague also warned that prices are expected to go up again on Thursday.

Davinder Soni, part-owner of the Canco Gas Station in north Barrie on Bayfield Street, said people are changing their fuel-buying habits and they are not benefiting from the high prices.

“It’s not very busy,” said Soni. “People used to fill $100 worth of gas. Now they fill $50. Our commission is the same on the litre and our credit card fees are double right now.”

He added the younger generation could be suffering the most.

“Especially for the teenagers, the young people, they don’t really have money. The older people are okay. They can fill a tank but they don’t have money,” said Soni. “They’re very uncomfortable.”
