Health officials warn of possible measles exposure at Collingwood hospital

The health unit warns of a possible measles exposure in Collingwood.

Health officials are alerting the public to a potential measles exposure at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, marking the latest in a string of confirmed cases in the region.

According to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU), the possible exposure occurred on Sun., May 4, in the hospital’s emergency department, including the ‘see and treat’ area. Anyone who was registered at the facility between 11:14 a.m. and 8:28 p.m. that day is being contacted directly by the health unit.

This marks the latest development in a growing concern, as SMDHU has confirmed four cases of measles in the region so far this year.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through the air. It can live on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours. Health officials remind the public that even brief exposure in shared indoor spaces can be enough to transmit the virus, especially to those who are unvaccinated or have compromised immune systems.

“If you were born before 1970, you likely had measles as a child and are generally considered immune and protected,” SMDHU stated.

Symptoms usually begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. These early signs are often followed a few days later by a red, blotchy rash that typically starts on the face and spreads downward across the body.

The health unit encourages anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms for 21 days following the exposure date and to avoid public places if symptoms appear.

Anyone exhibiting symptoms of measles should seek medical attention.
