Hanging decorative lights this holiday season? Remember these safety tips

Planning to hang some decorative lights for the holiday season? While many enjoy the annual tradition, it can be easy to forget about the potential electrical dangers that go along with it.

In 2023, Health Canada reported that 126 incidents involving decorative lighting strings in the country occurred between June 20, 2011, and December 31, 2022. Out of those 126 reports, nine suffered electric shock injuries and another nine said they had minor burn injuries.

Here are a few tips to avoid injuries and electrical fires this winter from the Ontario government:

Always check for frayed or damaged electrical cords, light strings and extension cords. Make sure to buy electrical products that have a recognized certification mark like “CSA” from the Canadian Standards Association on the package.

Do not overload electrical outlets with plugs and extension cords and always hang lights where they are meant to be. Hang outdoor lights outside and indoor lights inside.

It is important to read the manufacturer’s instructions before installing holiday lights and decorations. Try to stay clear of power lines when decorating your space outdoors.

Always, turn your holiday lights off before going to bed or leaving the house. “Saving money on hydro bills means more gifts for your loved ones,” stated the Ontario government.

Remove lights right after the holiday season ends, especially if they are not designed for year-round use.

According to stats posted on the Ontario government website, misuse of electrical products and unapproved or counterfeit products cause more than 900 fires and an average of six deaths each year.
