Construction crews make significant progress on new YMCA in Barrie

Construction is well underway at the new $70-million YMCA in Barrie.

The Barrie YMCA’s new community hub is taking shape, with crews making big strides on the $70 million state-of-the-art project.

Officials say the foundation has been poured, and electrical work is in the early stages.

The building will feature a gymnasium, indoor track, lap and leisure pools, child and youth programming, meeting rooms, indoor playground, and seniors programming.

“We’re constructing so much more than a building,” staff noted in a social media post. “We’re building a space where everyone belongs, designed for connection, growth, and opportunity. We’re building a new centre of community in Barrie.”

The new facility comes more than three years after the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka closed three locations, including the centre in Barrie, due to financial pressures.

In 2023, officials signed a 50-year lease agreement with the City of Barrie to build the new YMCA adjacent to Sadlon Arena at 535 Bayview Drive.

Ball Construction is leading the project. “We’re honoured to help bring this transformative vision to life for the people of Barrie,” stated Jason Ball, president of Ball Construction. “The YMCA is more than a gym—it’s a space that brings community together. We’re proud to be part of building that future.”

The new facility is on schedule for completion in 2027.
