Collingwood appoints new councillor

Collingwood Mayor Yvonne Hamlin welcomes Ian MacCulloch as the newest member of council during the special meeting held Thursday, March 20, 2025.

As of Thursday, the newest member of the Collingwood council takes his seat at the table.

The new appointee, Ian MacCulloch, was one of 27 applicants who showed an interest in the position after the town decided to hold an election for the position until the end of the term in 2026. Five candidates pulled their names before last night’s meeting.

The position was previously held by Brandon Houston, who resigned at the end of January.

In his expression of interest for the posting, MacCulloch said, “I would represent Collingwood residents with integrity and a forward-thinking approach. With a commitment to well-reasoned decision-making and a fact-based perspective. I believe that council serves the town best with listening, understanding, and acting in the best interests of residents. Our town is growing and evolving, and I am passionate about helping shape its future.”

Each of the 22 council candidates were provided with five minutes to address council during the special council meeting prior to council making their decision. Council unanimously approved the appointment bylaw, and the clerk administered the Oath of Office and Declaration of Acknowledgement and Acceptance of the Council Code of Conduct as affirmed by the new council member.

“We are pleased to conduct a fair and transparent process for council’s selection of our new councillor, including providing the public an opportunity to observe the proceedings,” said clerk Sara Almas.

“It is wonderful to have received so many expressions of interest from qualified and passionate individuals in our community.”
