Blowing snow causes rough day on the roads across Central Ontario

With buses cancelled and weather alerts, here’s how the community is dealing with what Mother Nature has thrown at us.

From Grey County, through Dufferin and across Simcoe County and Muskoka, it was a stressful day on the roads for drivers.

With another heavy band of squalls overnight people woke up Tuesday to find themselves in some of the worst whiteout conditions they can remember.

Police closed several roads because of blowing snow.

A large swatch of County Road 124 was also closed again.

Parts of County Road 6 in Southern Georgian Bay shut down because of the dangerous conditions. Police are reporting a five-vehicle collision on the road with no major injuries.

Highway 11 closed twice due to multi-vehicle pileups - one between Bracebridge and Gravenhurst and the other in Washago.

Schools closed in Grey County and school buses were once again cancelled and pulled off the roads.

OPP Const. Andrew Fines said, “You just get into a complete whiteout. You have no idea where you are or what side of the road you are on.”

Police say there are too may drivers who ignore the closed signs on bad weather days.

“It’s happening on a consistent basis, to be completely honest,” Fines said.

The OPP is reminding people that if they get caught in an accident on a closed road, insurance companies will not bail them out.

In Midland, more epic amounts of snow and another clean-up and dig-out day.

Midland resident Alex Baker said, “I’m sick of this stuff, man. It’s too much. I’ve been out here for about an hour now. I’d say a good probably 15 centimetres plus some blowing.”

Tuesday’s concern was a mixture of falling and blowing snow. Police across the region are reminding drivers on these kinds of days to avoid any unnecessary travel, if possible, and always stay off closed roads.
