Algonquin’s famous fall colours arrive earlier than last year

Peak fall colours arrive early at Algonquin Park drawing thousands of visitors eager to witness one of Ontario’s most breathtaking natural displays.

Each fall, the forests of Algonquin draw thousands of visitors eager to witness one of Ontario’s most breathtaking natural displays. This year is no exception, with the park’s famous maple canopy now glowing in reds and oranges.

According to Dave Hunt with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the conditions leading up to the season have played a big role in the vibrancy of the colours.

Colour change

Traditionally fall colours are on their best display from mid-September until mid-October for a large part of the province, with late September being the peak time for the orange and red colours in Algonquin Provincial Park.

Hunt says it is important to note that not all trees turn colour at the same time. In Algonquin, visitors can enjoy the golden encore, a second peak of bright yellows from birch, poplar, and tamarack trees that typically takes place through much of October after the bright reds and oranges from the famous maples have faded.

This year, Hunt says the shift from green to colour has happened quickly. Only two weeks ago the park was just 10 per cent changed, but it has now surged to more than 80 per cent.

“The change often occurs quickly, which is part of why it is so hard to predict when colours will be best in the park,” said Hunt to CTV News.

Less daylight is the key trigger for colour change. The bright reds, oranges and yellows seen on maple trees occur when the trees begin to reclaim leaf nutrients before winter.

“Without these nutrients, the leaves can no longer produce chlorophyll and they lose their green colour, exposing the underlying yellow pigment,” he continued.

Weather and climate

Weather and climate influence the intensity and timing of the colours. Everything from rain and snow, to wind and water can impact the timing, brightness and quality of the fall foliage.

The tamarack tree, a unique species in Algonquin, is always a standout despite being a conifer, it turns golden and sheds its needles like deciduous trees.

Hunt says the brightest red and orange displays have appeared around September 27. Last fall, the colours peaked later into October, but this year the show arrived earlier.

Best viewing

Viewing opportunities throughout Algonquin Provincial Park are along the Highway 60 Corridor and other access points, such as the Park’s trails and day use areas.
