It’s not a bird nor a plane that will be visiting children at a camp in central Ontario. It’s a CH-147F Chinook helicopter. The Air Force chopper will fly more than 300 kilometres from 1 Wing base in Kingston, Ont., to Dorset on Monday. According to the release from the Canadian Armed Forces, the chopper will be landing at Moorelands Camp, northeast of Lake of Bays, to visit children attending Camp BUCKO, known otherwise as Burn Camp for Kids in Ontario. Founded in 1995, the residential camp is free for young burn survivors in Ontario. Initially administered by the Burn Units at four Ontario hospitals, Camp BUCKO became a registered charity in 2000. The Armed Forces say the helicopter will be flying “altitudes no less than 500 feet above the highest obstacle on their route.” It will land at Moorelands Camp at 1 p.m. and remain there on display until 3 p.m. The Armed Forces say the helicopter is visiting the children as part of a community engagement event aimed at providing the children an opportunity to meet the aircrew and learn about the CH-147F. Residents of the area are warned that the Chinook may generate an unfamiliar noise and attract the attention of many on its way there or back.
