A 3D printer has led to criminal charges in Owen Sound after police say it was used to create a prohibited weapon.

According to the Owen Sound Police Service, this case highlights how commonly used technology can cross into illegal territory.

While 3D printers are often used to make useful or creative items, police say the situation changes when they are used to manufacture dangerous objects.

In this instance, a person has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, along with other offences.

What this means

“Plastic isn’t prohibited until you manufacture dangerous things,” the police service emphasizes.

Under Section 84(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada, brass knuckles are classified as prohibited weapons. This means it is illegal to possess, buy, sell, import, or manufacture them anywhere in Canada.

“The law does not distinguish between metal, plastic, or carbon fiber brass knuckles," says Owen Sound police. “Any item designed to enhance the force of a punch is considered a prohibited weapon, regardless of the material used. Even non-metal versions can lead to criminal charges if possessed or used.”

The law applies federally, so provincial or municipal differences do not affect this prohibition.
