A wedding ring and necklace that were allegedly stolen early in the summer have been returned to their owner. As part of a lengthy investigation into distraction thefts across the country that dates back to earlier this summer, police have arrested two people. One of those incidents was a wedding ring and necklace police say were taken from a senior in late June. Police say a 27-year-old Barrie man was among the arrested in connection with the theft. According to investigators, in July, police in Winnipeg took two people into custody they believe were involved in thefts: the Barrie man and a 26-year-old Scarborough woman. As the investigation continued with Windsor police, authorities were able to recover what they call a “significant quantity of jewelry” after a search warrant. The police services say the suspects matched the descriptions from a reported distraction theft that happened June 28 on Lay Street in Barrie. Investigators say the man and woman pulled up to a 75-year-old man standing in his driveway. The pair was in a late-model, dark-coloured SUV, according to police. According to authorities, the woman, described as having gold teeth and who was the passenger in the vehicle, got out and spoke with the man, offering him a necklace, which she placed around his neck. She then allegedly stole his gold necklace with his wedding ring attached that he was wearing. The 75-year-old man, police say, didn’t know his necklace was stolen until the duo drove off. Barrie police say they were able to recover the necklace and wedding ring on Oct. 11 and return them to their owner. Investigators warn there could be more victims and are asking anyone who may have information to come forward to Barrie police.
