P.E.I. spending up to $375K on independent review of regulatory commission

The Prince Edward Island government could spend up to $375,000 on an independent review of the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission’s effectiveness and efficiency.

Last week, the province announced it was launching a review of the commission’s role and responsibilities, including issues related to energy regulation and land protection. Rory Francis was appointed as the commissioner to lead the review.

“As Prince Edward Island continues to grow and change, it is important that our public institutions evolve alongside it,” said Premier Rob Lantz in a news release. “This review will help ensure our regulatory framework remains transparent, effective, and responsive to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

A document submitted to the P.E.I. legislature on Tuesday noted the total budget for the review is expected to be between $350,000 and $375,000, plus tax.

The review will include public engagement and a set of recommendations for the government’s consideration.

The full report is due to the minister of Education and Early Years by Nov. 1.

The commission, which was established in 1991, regulates the Maritime Electric Company, which distributes energy for the majority of P.E.I. residents. The commission also regulates petroleum pricing and certain water and wastewater utilities.
