P.E.I. sees increase in insulin pump users following program expansion

Prince Edward Island says it has seen an increase of 162 per cent over the past year in residents with Type 1 diabetes accessing funding through the Insulin Pump Program.

The Government of P.E.I. expanded insulin pump coverage last September, so that all medically eligible residents with Type 1 diabetes could apply to help cover the cost of insulin pump therapy.

The program was previously only open to those under the age of 25.

“We know that better management leads to better health outcomes. While the pump isn’t right for everyone, this income tested program gives Islanders living with type 1 diabetes the means to manage this complex health condition,” said Minister of Health and Wellness, Mark McLane. “Government is pleased to see so many Islanders benefiting from the expansion of this program and remains committed to supporting investments in diabetes care and management.”

Around 1,100 people in P.E.I. live with Type 1 diabetes. Before the change, the program assisted 50 residents, and it has since grown to 131 residents.

The expansion of the program builds on the existing funding which included diabetes medications and glucose testing supplies from the Provincial Diabetes Drug Program, Glucose Sensor Program and National Pharmacare.

“More comprehensive access to devices, supplies and medications reduces the complications associated with diabetes and ensures people with diabetes can live healthy lives,” said Laura O’Driscoll with Diabetes Canada. “Insulin pumps are a safe and effective way for people with diabetes to deliver insulin and removing the age cap ensures more people have access to this life changing technology.”

Patients seeking an insulin pump must meet a pre-defined medical eligibility assessment and receive training through the Health PEI Provincial Diabetes Program.
