The Prince Edward Island Fire Marshals Office is investigating a fire in Summerside early Sunday morning. The Summerside Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on Water Street East around 2 a.m. According to a Facebook post by the Summerside Fire Department, crews were able to evacuate all residents from the building. The fire department says around 50 members and six fire apparatus responded to the incident, and crews were able to extinguish the fire in less than an hour. Fire damage to the building was contained to the ground-floor unit and the residential unit directly above it, while some other units sustained smoke damage. “Most displaced residents were able to arrange overnight accommodations with family or friends. Three families required assistance from the Canadian Red Cross,” said the Summerside Fire Department in the post. The provincial Fire Marshals Office arrived at the scene around 4 a.m., and Summerside Fire Department crews remained at the property for the rest of the night to monitor for additional hot spots.
