P.E.I. calls for federal investigation into alleged foreign interference, money laundering

The Prince Edward Island government is calling for immediate investigations into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering involving entities operating within the province.

The government said they released two formal letters on Thursday addressed to the RCMP and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC).

According to a news release from the province, the letters signed by Premier Rob Lantz and cabinet ministers were sent to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme and FINTRAC CEO Sarah Paquet. They urge federal authorities to engage with individuals who have come forward with information and to determine whether the evidence warrants criminal or regulatory action.

“These allegations strike at the heart of our democratic values and the trust Islanders place in their institutions. Islanders deserve clarity. They deserve to know these matters are being handled by the proper investigative bodies,” said Lantz in the release.

The province said the concerns come after long-standing speculation and recent public statements made during an Oct. 8, 2025, press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa where a former RCMP superintendent suggested information had been gathered that could warrant a criminal investigation related to activities in P.E.I.

The province said they directed the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) to conduct an independent investigation surrounding land ownership in February, which is currently underway.

“Whether these claims are substantiated or not, Islanders must not be left in the dark. A credible, impartial investigation is needed to uphold public confidence and to reassure Islanders,” said Cory Deagle, minister of Housing, Lands and Communities, in the release.
