Transport Canada is spending $7.3 million on new infrastructure at the Wood Islands, P.E.I., ferry terminal. Sani-Sable, a Quebec-based company, has been awarded a contract to construct a holding basin on federal land west of the terminal for dredged sediment. Regular dredging is needed in the area to maintain safe access for the ferry vessels, which operate between Wood Islands and Caribou, N.S. The federal government says the project is in response to environmental concerns raised by the community about the impact disposal at sea could have on people’s livelihoods. “The ferry services in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Quebec facilitate travel, trade, and opportunities. These transportation links keep connections and communities strong,” said Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon in a news release. “(The) announcement reflects the Government of Canada’s commitment to serving the people who rely on the Wood Islands ferry service and the fishers who depend on the marine environment for their livelihoods.” The holding basin will have a capacity of close to 125,000 cubic metres, according to the release. Construction is expected to begin next month and be finished before the seasonal ferry service resumes in the spring of 2027. For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
