A man was seriously injured in a snowmobile crash near Charlottetown on Saturday. RCMP said it happened around 12:30 p.m. on a private driveway off the Trans-Canada Highway in Hazelbrook. According to police, the driver was riding alone on their own property and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. “Initial investigation indicates the snowmobile was travelling at a high rate of speed before crashing,” said police in a news release Sunday. The 37-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital. Police said lack of helmet use and speed appear to be factors in this crash. “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of helmets,” said RCMP Corp. Gavin Moore. “Whether you’re riding an ATV, motorcycle, or snowmobile—on a trail, roadway, or even your own property—wearing a helmet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death.” The RCMP said all snowmobile riders should wear a properly fitted, certified helmet regardless of how far they are travelling and should operate at safe speeds. This was the second serious snowmobile collision in P.E.I. on Saturday. Just after 1 a.m., a 53-year-old Charlottetown man died after crashing into a tree in Brackley.
