Police say charges won’t be laid in the death of a youth who was struck by a transport truck while crossing the road to get to a school bus in Dunstaffnage, P.E.I., last month. The RCMP released an update Wednesday, saying the investigation is now complete, and it determined there are no grounds to lay charges. “RCMP conducted a complete investigation to determine if criminality was a factor,” said police in a news release. “This included detailed examination of the scene by a PEI RCMP Collision Reconstructionist who gathered photographs, measurements for calculations determining speeds and vehicle trajectories, reviewed a detailed mechanical inspection of vehicles involved, and conducted interviews with witnesses.” The Queens District RCMP, Island EMS and North Shore Fire Department all responded to the collision just before 8 a.m. on May 21. Police said the youth was crossing Route 2 to get onto a school bus when they were struck by the truck. It appeared the bus was slowing down to make a regular stop in the area when the crash happened, police said at the time. The youth was treated on scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital, where they later died from their injuries. “This incident has had far-reaching effects on our Island community, and our thoughts continue to be with the grieving family at this difficult time,” said Cpl. Gavin Moore, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP. Police have not released any details about the youth, except to say they were over the age of 12.
