80-bed long-term care facility announced in Cornwall, P.E.I.

The town of Cornwall, P.E.I., is set to get its first long-term care facility, complete with 80 beds.

The province announced Thursday the Mount Continuing Care Community, a nursing home in Charlottetown, has been awarded the contact.

The government committed in last year’s budget to add up to 175 new long-term care beds across the island to “help meet growing demand and relieve pressure on the healthcare system.”

Under a 30-year agreement, the province will support the construction and operation of the new Cornwall home, cover residents’ medical costs and provide accommodation subsidies.

The province says it will also provide up to $9.8 million annually to help offset accommodation costs for residents.

“Long-term care is a critical part of healthcare and caring for Island seniors is a priority for our government. This investment will not only ensure more Islanders have access to high-quality long-term care when they need it but also help address some of the overcapacity issues we are seeing in our hospitals,” says Minister of Health and Wellness Cory Deagle.

Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt adds the facility will add jobs and provide an economic boost to the local economy.

The 80 new beds will increase the island’s capacity to 1,405.

The province says it is planning and developing more long-term care expansions across the island.

Long-term care services on P.E.I. are delivered through nine public and 11 private homes.

The Cornwall facility is expected to open in April 2029.
