A 21-year-old man from Old Bedford, N.S., is planning to run 1,000 kilometres across the province in 23 days. Darcy Eygun is aiming to start up north in Cape Breton at the Cape North Lighthouse on July 27. Then, he plans to run a marathon each day to arrive at the southernmost point of the mainland, Baccaro Point. “I’ve been training a lot, I’ve been doing about a half marathon a day,” he told CTV Your Morning Atlantic’s Crystal Garrett. His goal is to raise $75,000 for Feed NS to combat food insecurity. He says he felt the urge to act when he came across provincial statistics showing a low GDP per capita. “I know that Nova Scotia’s obviously struggling and we’ve historically been a province that’s quite poor,” says Eygun. “I didn’t know it was this bad.” He figured Nova Scotians would be hit hardest by groceries and the cost of putting food on the table. “Obviously prices are going up. They’re very expensive and they probably will only go up even more. So, I thought for a province that has given me so much, I should give back,” says Eygun. He points out he’s not a billionaire and can’t provide funds from his own pockets, but he can run. Eygun has been calling out for sponsors to support the journey, specifically requesting a van to follow the run through. He says he had one lined up, but the sponsor dropped out about two weeks ago. “The van is the most important part of the run. Without a van, the run can’t happen. It’s our main base throughout the whole event,” he says. He says sponsors can reach out by emailing him at darcyeygun@nscoast2coast.com. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
