The Sydney Curling Club in Sydney, N.S., will soon have a new facility that will replace the current 115-year-old club on George Street. The fully accessible space will feature six curling sheets, increasing the capacity by 50 per cent. A news release from the provincial government says the club received $3 million for a new energy efficient facility, which will be built near Open Hearth Park. “Our government is proud to invest in infrastructure that promotes active living and supports the needs of our growing communities,” said Brian Comer, minister of Addictions and Mental Health and MLA for Cape Breton East, on behalf of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Minister Dave Ritcey. “Cape Bretoners deserve a modern, welcoming facility where they can connect and curl.” The new facility will allow Sydney to host larger curling tournaments, drawing visitors to the region and providing a boost to the tourism sector. The province says it will also operate year-round as a multi-purpose recreation and event space. “This investment means so much to our members and the wider community – it helps us grow the sport we love, welcome new participants and ensure the club remains a vibrant hub for recreation and connection in Sydney,” said Ian MacInnis, president of the Sydney Curling Club.
