‘Such a great festival’: Pugwash, N.S., hosts 75th annual Gathering of the Clans

Thousands gather in Pugwash, Nova Scotia for the 75th Gathering of the Clans.

For one day each year, the quiet village of Pugwash transforms into one of Nova Scotia’s busiest Canada Day destinations.

Thousands lined the streets Wednesday as the Gathering of the Clans celebrated its 75th anniversary, drawing visitors from across the Maritimes and beyond for a full day of parades, Highland dancing, piping competitions, live entertainment and community traditions.

“It’s amazing, like unbelievable,” said event coordinator Christie Blackie. “It has been happening for so long here that it’s just ingrained in us.”

What began in the 1950s as a fundraiser for the local hospital has grown into one of the Maritimes’ signature Canada Day celebrations.

“We’re about 780 people that live in the village, but on July 1st we have at least 6,000 to 8,000 people come to the gates,” said Blackie. “We have people come from everywhere. People from United States, right through to England to Germany.”

The streets filled early as families gathered for the annual parade before making their way to events spread throughout the village. Highland dancers took to the stage as music played, while nearby, competitors tested their skills in piping competitions overlooking the Northumberland Strait at the historic Thinkers Lodge.

The competition attracts judges from across the country, providing valuable feedback for musicians at every level.

“We have judges from Atlantic Canada, Ontario come in, B.C. sometimes,” said Gordon Murray, chief steward with the Atlantic Pipe Band Association. “And we have some of the best instruction in piping in the world.”

One of the busiest stops of the day was the lobster roll dinner where visitors lined up at Pugwash’s “Lobster Factory” in the downtown.

For many families, the Gathering of the Clans has become an annual tradition passed from one generation to the next.

“We have our whole family here. We’ve been coming here for, we calculated, 51 years,” said one attendee. “We’ve got three generations ranging from 12 to 86.”

That enthusiasm is exactly what organizers hope will carry the event into the future.

“I’ve already started planning for next year,” Blackie said with a laugh. “I already started a list like, ‘OK, we need to do this. We need to do that.’”

After 75 years, she believes the celebration is something the community should be proud of.

“We should be proud of what we accomplish here, and I think we should be proud as a small village in Nova Scotia that we were able to still pull this off after 75 years and still bring the attractions,” she said. “There’s so much out there to do in this world and we still have such a great festival.”

For organizers and visitors alike, that’s what continues to make the Gathering of the Clans one of Nova Scotia’s enduring Canada Day traditions – a celebration proving that some of the biggest events can happen in the smallest of communities.
