Subject of emergency alert in Belmont, N.S., charged with 14 offences: RCMP

A Belmont, N.S., man who was the subject of an emergency alert in Colchester County on Friday has now been charged with 14 offences, says RCMP.

Police say they responded to a report of an unwanted man at a house on Lightbody Road in Belmont.

According to a news release Saturday, the man arrived in a black Mazda sedan and attempted to break into the house. He then allegedly broke a window at the residence with what may have been a rifle, before leaving in the Mazda. Police added he did not go into the home.

The vehicle was located in the 900 block of Belmont Road at around 11 a.m. and police were able to identify a suspect.

An emergency alert was issued in Colchester County around 11:40 a.m. telling residents to shelter in place.

Police say they arrested 35-year-old Stephen Joseph Maloney around 1:20 p.m. He has been charged with:

• break and entering with intent
• mischief
• possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• unauthorized possession of firearm
• possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
• possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition
• careless use of firearm
• failure to comply with release order (seven counts)

Maloney remains in custody and is set to appear in court in Truro on Monday.
