New food offerings at Peggy's Cove

Six by the Sea has officially opened all its doors in Peggy’s Cove, N.S.

The collection of the six historic homes have been restored and are now hosting non-for-profit and for-profit businesses and cultural experiences.

“This is our first summer to have everything together,” said Eleanor McCain, founder and CEO of Six by the Sea. “It’s a celebration of Atlantic Canada, the Maritime provinces and the east coast.”

Six by the Sea is “a village within a village” located in Peggy’s Cove. The original historic homes are now hosting Holy Mackerel, a retail store with local artisanal pieces; Spindrift art gallery; Hunky Dory, a french fry and ice cream store; the Schoolhouse, a performance and gathering space; Margaret’s Café and the Peggy’s Cove Centre for Arts and Culture.

Margaret’s Café and Hunky Dory are the most recent additions to the Six by the Sea collection. Both businesses reside in historic homes from the 1800s.

Each of the six historic homes also feature a QR code in the window for visitors to scan and learn about the history.

“It really ties it back to the community today and you can see what each building did over the last couple hundred years,” McCain said.

Margaret’s Café, named after Peggy’s Cove and the St. Margaret’s Bay as well as the founder’s mother, will also host a Ceilidh on Saturday afternoons to celebrate the Maritime culture.

The Schoolhouse will also feature a new tour this summer which will showcase the history of the one-room schoolhouse that it was originally used as from 1839 to 1958.

“It’s really to share pride of place, the Maritimes, with anyone who’s visiting whether it’s the local residents or anyone who is visiting from around the world,” McCain said.
