The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says it is investigating a collision between a Halifax Regional Police car and a bicycle that left the cyclist with a serious injury. Police received a report of a theft at the Atlantic Superstore on Quinpool Road around 2:30 p.m. on April 26. The suspect was reported to have left the scene on a bicycle. Police said two officers driving a patrol vehicle spotted the suspect on Nora Bernard Street a short time later and activated their lights and siren. The bicycle turned onto Maynard Street and the vehicle collided with the suspect and then hit a power pole, police said. The suspect and one officer were taken to hospital and the other officer was treated by paramedics. SiRT released an update Wednesday, stating the cyclist was diagnosed with a fracture. “After review of the medical records and due to the serious injury of the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation,” reads a news release from the team. SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, police say the suspect, a 37-year-old man, is facing charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.
