Ottawa announces nearly $10M for N.S. youth mental health services run by IWK

The federal government has announced close to $10 million to expand Integrated Youth Services (IYS) across Nova Scotia.

“Every young person deserves to know that when they reach out for help, it will be there,” says Maggie Chi, parliamentary secretary for the minister of health, in a news release.

Chi announced the $10 million in Halifax on Tuesday.

The IWK will put the money toward a project aimed at strengthening existing services and improving access to care for Indigenous youth and rural communities.

The IWK’s Anchor Youth Space project operates sites in Halifax, Sydney and Amherst already.

They provide walk-in support for mental health and addiction issues and counselling services with no referral needed for youth aged 12 to 25.

“Anchor Youth Space demonstrates what’s possible when governments, healthcare, community organizations, donors, youth and families come together around a shared vision,” says Dr. Krista Jangaard, IWK president and CEO.

“This investment will strengthen our network of Integrated Youth Services sites, helping more young people access the care and supports they need, when and where they need them.”

Five more sites are set to open across the province, with hubs set to open in Bridgewater, Eskasoni, another in Halifax, New Glasgow and Yarmouth.

“Early access to mental health and wellness supports can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life,” says Nova Scotia Minister of Addictions and Mental Health Brian Comer.

“Together with IWK Health, government and partner investments, and community organizations, we are expanding access, reducing barriers and making it easier for young people to get help in places they feel comfortable, connected, and understood.”

The project involves partnerships with local and provincial groups like YMCA, YWCA, the Eskasoni Health Centre, the New Dawn Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the BGC.
