N.S. fire that killed 3 children ruled accidental

Two fatal fires in the Halifax area earlier this year have been ruled accidents.

A fire that claimed the lives of three children in Lower Sackville, N.S., last January has been ruled an accident following an investigation.

The Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency’s report on the Jan. 11 tragedy says the fire started in the basement TV room of the semi-attached dwelling on Riverside Drive.

The ignition source was electrical. The report also notes there were no operating smoke alarms in the home.

Cayson Jermaine Loppie, five, his sister Alauna Marie Loppie, nine, and their six-year-old cousin, Chloe Margaret Greenough-Steiger, all died due to the fire. A funeral was held for them on Jan. 21.

The report also notes there were two injuries as a result of the fire.

Fatal Darmouth fire ruled accidental

A separate report from the fire department ruled that a fatal fire on Thompson Street in Dartmouth on Jan. 24 was also accidental.

The report says the fire, which claimed two lives, started in the living room of the detached dwelling. The ignition source was accidental and, like the other incident, there were no operating smoke alarms.

The fire department will be discussing these incidents at 5663 West St. in Halifax at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
