MRI services coming to South Shore Regional Hospital: N.S. Health

The South Shore Regional Hospital (SSRH), in Bridgewater, N.S., is set to receive a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite.

With it, South Shore patients will have access to advanced diagnostic imaging closer to home.

“MRI is a vital tool that helps diagnose conditions earlier, when treatment can be most effective,” says Nick Hilton, MLA for Yarmouth and ministerial assistant to the Minister of Health Michelle Thompson, in a news release from Nova Scotia Health.

The new equipment is expected to support roughly 3,000 patients in its first year and increase over time, according to the release.

The new service is part of a broader redevelopment plan at the hospital, including a new emergency department, new dialysis unit, and upgraded spaces for endoscopy and day surgery.

The MRI equipment was funded in part by a $725,000 donation from the Queens General Hospital Foundation to the South Shore Health Foundation’s Brighter Days capital campaign.

In total, the campaign raised around $10.6 million for the hospital’s redevelopment plans.

The provincial government is set to support operational funding for the MRI service.

“The opening of the South Shore’s first MRI is a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision,” says Arleen Stevens, CEO of the South Shore Health Foundation.

Patient appointments are expected to begin in the last week of June.
