A 36-year-old man from Sipekne’katik First Nation has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a fishery officer in Smiths Settlement, N.S. RCMP responded to a report of an assault near Highway 7 around 5 a.m. Saturday. Once on scene, police say officers learned that Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) was trying to conduct an inspection at Eel Pond when a man driving an Acura TL hit a uniformed fishery officer who was on foot and instructing the driver to stop. Police say the DFO officer was not injured. RCMP officers arrested the man at the scene and searched his vehicle. During the search, police say they seized an extendable baton and drug paraphernalia. The man was later released. He is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 to face a charge of assault with a weapon. The RCMP says a second man who was there at the time of the incident was also arrested by DFO in connection with a Fisheries Act investigation and was later released.
