‘Late Bloomer Season’: Grammy-nominated Nova Scotia artist releases debut album

Grammy-nominated singer and Maritimer Laura Roy chats about her new debut album “Late Bloomer Season.”

Laura Roy’s music career has taken her from rural Nova Scotia to some of the world’s biggest stages.

The Grammy-nominated songwriter has performed with artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, and Camila Cabello. Now, she’s taking centre stage with her debut album “Late Bloomer Season.”

“It’s been a labour of love for the last couple of years, writing on the road and in between so much craziness. It just feels really special to finally have it out in the world,” said Roy.

“Going from growing up in Canning, to Halifax, to Toronto, to London and the U.K., I just haven’t stopped really. I’ve just kind of taken every opportunity that has come and it’s been exciting growing and learning and releasing music.”

For over a decade, Roy has been releasing music that blends contemporary folk, R&B, and alternative pop. However, “Late Bloomer Season” is her first full-length album.

“I was on the road for a good three months travelling the world and singing other people’s music, singing for other people and it felt like really necessary to come home to Nova Scotia to record the album. I couldn’t have done it anywhere else. It feels very full circle to be home and releasing it in this way,” she said.

“In a lot of ways, it feels like I’ve finally arrived as an artist and I’m saying everything I want to say in a full-length project.”

Roy says the album has a message of allowing life to unfold at its own pace.

“The big thing with my music is I want to connect with people,” she said.

A show celebrating the release of “Late Bloomer Season” is set for May 31 at the Sanctuary Arts Centre in Dartmouth, N.S. Roy says she’s looking forward to playing her new tunes on stage with the people she recorded them with.

“I worked with a lot of local musicians and when we do the show at the end of the month we’re going to have live strings and I think it’s going to feel very special to just do it live in front of everyone,” she said.

“Late Bloomer Season” is now available on all music services.
