The Lake George wildfire is now under control, according to the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The department says the fire is responding well to suppression efforts and is not expected to grow past its current size of 288 hectares. It’s anticipated to be extinguished before winter conditions arrive. In the update on X, DNR says crews will make efforts to detect hot spots and extinguish them. “Crews walk through the active fire zone, smelling for smoke and feeling the ground for heat with their hands,” read the post. “They dig and douse with water to put the hot spots out.” Residents evacuated The fire led to the area being put under an evacuation order on Sept. 29, with 353 properties being evacuated. A 24/7 evacuation shelter was established at the Louis Millett Community Complex for evacuees who had to leave their homes. On Wednesday, DNR announced residents were allowed to return home the following day as the wildfire was being held at 288 hectares. No structures were damaged in the fire, according to DNR.
