Halifax hosting Minor Box Lacrosse National Championships

Halifax is hosting some of the best young lacrosse players in Canada this week.

Lacrosse is Canada’s national summer sport and this week the Halifax-area is playing host to some of the country’s best young players.

The 2025 Minor Box Lacrosse National Championships, taking place from Aug. 11 to 15, consists of 32 teams from across the country who will compete in 114 games.

“We are incredibly excited to host the Minor Box Lacrosse National Championships in Halifax,” said Lacrosse Nova Scotia president Charlotte Henderson in a news release.

“This event will not only provide a fantastic opportunity to witness high-level lacrosse but will also showcase our vibrant city to visitors from across Canada. We’re ready to welcome the athletes, their families, and lacrosse fans to Halifax.”

Team Nova Scotia will host Team British Columbia, Team Alberta, Team Saskatchewan, Team Ontario, Team Quebec, Team New Brunswick, Team PEI, and First Nations Lacrosse.

“It’s really fun to get to host and play in these rinks that we’ve seen before and know where everything is at,” said Joss Moran, U15 Female NS Lacrosse.

“It feels amazing, the home crowd, the boys are fired up. We beat New Brunswick this morning and we are ready to keep buzzing,” said Luke Silk-Brown, U15 NS Lacrosse.

Nova Scotia is one of the smallest provinces represented at the tournament, but the sport is growing in popularity.

“I’ve goy my socks, I’ve got my tank here, I’ve got all sorts with my eyes here and my fingernails and my husband has a big flag here and tomorrow I’ll have stockings,” said lacrosse parent Chantal Piercy, who was decked out from head to toe.

Many of these athletes face off against each other in minor box lacrosse during the summer. To be selected to the provincial team is the ultimate point of pride.

“We went to New Brunswick for a couple exhibition games and that’s where I feel like we really gelled as a team and came together as a family,” said Silk-Brown.

The host committee has been hard at work organizing the championships and making sure visitors experience Maritime hospitality.

“They have been working on this for several months, they’ve organized all the venues and done a great job of preparing for opening ceremonies... It’s an incredible amount of work,” said Charlotte Henderson, Lacrosse Nova Scotia president.

Shawn Williams, president of the Board at Lacrosse Canada, says these championships are a celebration of lacrosse.

“We anticipate a week of exciting competition and camaraderie,” said Williams in the release.

The opening ceremony will be free to the public and be held on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Zatzman Sportsplex in Dartmouth.
