Halifax ending public Wi-Fi at transit terminals, municipal parks

The Halifax Regional Municipality discontinued public Wi-Fi at transit terminals and municipal parks on Wednesday in a move it says will save roughly $450,000 annually.

In a social media post, the municipality said public Wi-Fi at all Halifax Transit terminals would end on Wednesday, noting a sharp decline in use in the last few years.

“Over the past few years, use of public Wi-Fi has declined significantly, with nearly 45 per cent fewer users from 2023 to 2024,” the post reads. “We understand the timing may cause some confusion, but this is not a joke.”

Graeme Benjamin, public affairs advisor with the municipality, confirmed they will be ending public Wi-Fi at the Alderney Ferry Terminal, Bridge Terminal, Lacewood Terminal, Mumford Terminal, Portland Hills Terminal and Sackville Terminal.

Benjamin said they will also be ending the service at municipal parks and public spaces. He noted the decision was made as part of the recent budget process.

“The discontinuation of public Wi-Fi was proposed as a cost savings measure during the Information Technology business unit’s 2026-27 budget presentation,” Benjamin said in an email. “Ending the service is expected to save approximately $450,000 in annual operating expenses.”
