Cape Breton to host Canadian Folk Music Awards next year

Musicians and officials are reacting to the news Cape Breton will host the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

A celebration of the best folk music in Canada is coming to Cape Breton next April.

The Canadian Folk Music Awards will be held in Sydney, N.S., from April 8 to 11, 2027, bringing together performers and fans for a weekend of songs.

“Hosting the Canadian Folk Music Awards is a tremendous opportunity for us,” said Cecil Clarke, mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, in a news release. “Our community has a deep appreciation for music, a vibrant arts and culture scene and a proud tradition of hosting world-class events that reflect who we are.

“We are excited to welcome artists and guests from across the country and share the music, culture and hospitality.”

Destination Cape Breton said the hosting fee for the awards show is $75,000.

The event, which was established in 2005, offers awards for album artwork, songwriters, instrumental composers, new artists and album of the year, among others.

“Hosting the Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2027 is a tremendous honour for Cape Breton Island and for our communities across CBRM,” said Terry Smith, CEO of Destination Cape Breton. “Music is at the heart of who we are. To welcome the Canadian folk music community to Cape Breton Island - Unama’ki is an opportunity to showcase not only our exceptional artists, venues and hospitality, but also the spirit, culture and creativity that define this place.”
