Saint John police officer charged with assault in connection to arrest: SiRT

A Saint John police officer has been charged with assault.

A member of the Saint John Police Force has been charged with assault in connection to an incident in July of last year.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says they were first contacted by Saint John police regarding the use of force by one of their officers during an arrest that took place on July 5, 2025.

SiRT was provided with additional details on Aug. 29, 2025. After reviewing the information, the police watchdog found the file did not meet the its mandate for an investigation.

Const. Michael Jackson was charged with:

• assault causing bodily harm
• assault with a weapon

Jackson is set to appear in court in June.

We continue to strive to uphold the highest level of accountability, professionalism, and transparency to preserve public trust and confidence,” says Chief R.M. Bruce with the Saint John Police Force in the news release.

SiRT investigates all matters involving death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence as well as other matters of public interest which arise from the actions of police officers, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control on an independent civilian director.
