Postmedia set to end printing in Moncton newspaper facility

Postmedia, the company that purchased Brunswick News in March, announced Tuesday the print editions of the Telegraph-Journal, Moncton's Times and Transcript and Fredericton's The Daily Gleaner will only be published on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays starting March 7.

Postmedia will cease printing newspapers at its Moncton, N.B., facility in the near future, but it will not be discontinuing print publication of its New Brunswick newspapers.

The Canadian-based media conglomerate announced Wednesday it will continue to publish and deliver print editions but will outsource the operations.

In a statement, Postmedia said it operates in a challenging economic environment that has gotten more difficult with a changing media landscape and the rise of the cost of printing materials.

“Following an assessment of printing and insert packaging operations, it was determined that outsourcing these operations from Postmedia’s Moncton facility would allow us to continue serving print subscribers and advertisers while supporting long-term financial sustainability,” read the statement.

“This decision was not taken lightly and is focused on changing how printing services are delivered to be more cost-effective and sustainable in the long-term.”

Printing and insert packaging operations will be outsourced from the Moncton facility located on Main Street by Aug. 2.

Postmedia purchased Brunswick News from J.D. Irving (JDI) in 2022 for more than $16 million in cash and shares.

A spokesperson for JDI told CTV News Atlantic the company owns the building that used to be home to the Times & Transcript offices, but “nothing more.”

The Times & Transcript, Telegraph-Journal and the Daily Gleaner are published three days a week.

In 2023, Postmedia announced the print editions of those three newspapers would only be published on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

They had previously been available from Monday to Saturday.
