The man who shot and killed three RCMP officers in Moncton, N.B., in June 2014 has been sentenced for assaulting a fellow inmate in prison in 2022. Justin Bourque and another man, Christian Enang Clyke, were both found guilty on Sept. 10 of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence. On Wednesday, Bourque was sentenced in Miramichi provincial court to two five-year prison terms, to be served concurrently. Clyke will be sentenced on Oct. 23. Bourque and Clyke attacked fellow inmate Chase Spence at the Atlantic Institution in Renous, N.B., on May 3, 2022. The court heard evidence from six Crown witnesses during a trial in May. Court documents state Bourque and Clyke used shanks, or weapons made inside the prison, to attack Spence in the laundry room and repeatedly hit him on the head. Spence was pinned to the ground and gas was fired from the prison’s control room to get control of the situation, while a guard threatened to use a carbine if the two men didn’t stop the assault. Spence was treated for stab wounds to the neck and chest. Bourque is already serving life sentences in Renous for the murders of constables Doug Larche, Fabrice Gevaudan and Dave Ross in a northwest Moncton neighbourhood on June 4, 2014. He also shot and wounded Const. Eric Dubois and Const. Darlene Goguen during his shooting rampage that night.
