High samples of E. coli put a pause on swimming at 3 Saint John beaches

Fisher Lake, Dominion Park Beach and Tucker Park Beach are temporarily closed for swimming, according to the City of Saint John.

On Friday afternoon, the city also added Tucker Park Beach to that list.

Public Health recently conducted tests which indicated high samples of E. coli bacteria in the waters.

“Swimming is not permitted at these locations until further notice,” reads the release.

Exposure to contaminated water can lead to a range of health and gastrointestinal issues.

The beaches were originally set to open on Monday but will remain closed until deemed safe by officials.

Warning signs have been posted at the affected areas, and lifeguards will be onsite during regular hours to advise the public and ensure visitors’ safety.

“While swimming is not permitted, residents and visitors can continue to enjoy these areas for a variety of other recreational activities,” says the city.

Testing will continue at the affected beaches and the city says it will provide updates as information becomes available.

No other beaches or swimming areas are impacted.
