RCMP in New Brunswick are warning the public and business owners about counterfeit cash circulating in the Florenceville area. Police said on Thursday a business reported that an employee had accepted a counterfeit $100 bill. According to police, the bill closely resembled Canadian currency, both in appearance and texture, however the primary indicator of its illegitimacy was the faint wording of “prop money” printed on the silver security section. “(It) is convincing enough that it could easily be passed as real currency if the recipient is not paying close attention,” said police in a news release Friday. RCMP said counterfeiters often rely on quick transactions and distracted moments. “Taking just a second to feel the raised ink or glance at the security window can make all the difference. If something seems off, trust that instinct,” said police. Genuine Canadian bills have crisp metallic portraits, they don’t peel, and their serial numbers or properly spaced and consistent. Police said anyone who circulates counterfeit currency may face arrest and prosecution under the Criminal Code of Canada. “If you are a business and you receive a suspicious bill and the suspect is still at the scene, call 911,” said RCMP. Police are asking anyone who encounters a suspicious bill in the area or has information on the incident in Florenceville to contact 506-325-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Florenceville is located approximately 115 kilometres northwest of Fredericton. For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
