All Saint John parks, trails reopen to the public after nearly one month

All parks and trails in Saint John, N.B., have reopened to the public nearly one month after they closed in response to the province’s fire ban.

However, the risks for wildfires remains high and the following activities are banned in all city parks:

• wood and propane fires
• BBQs
• fireworks
• outdoor open fires

People are also urged to use caution and avoid the following activities:

• smoking in wooded areas or areas with dry grass
• irresponsible use of ATVs on trails and in wooded areas
• setting off backyard fireworks
• outdoor open fires

The New Brunswick government removed most restrictions on Crown lands last month, however the provincewide burn ban remains in effect.

Saint John says its fire department may issue fines for those who violated the burn ban. Fines range from $140 to $2,100.

Residents are being asked to call 911 immediately if they see smoke or fire.

“The Saint John Emergency Management Organization (SJEMO) remains in active monitoring mode and is prepared to respond as needed,” reads a news release from the city.

“We urge all residents to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and help protect our community.”
