New Brunswick renters’ most common problems include affordability and dealing with necessary repairs, according to a new report from the provincial government. The survey, which was conducted as part of a larger review of the Residential Tenancies Act, received 2,852 responses, the majority of whom were tenants. “People had different views based on their own experiences,” the report reads. “But many agreed that the current rental system can be hard to understand and use.” The most common issues identified in the report include: “Many people said they know some of their rights. But they also said it can be hard to find trusted information and understand what steps to take,” the report reads. “People said rights, responsibilities, forms, and processes should be easier to understand and use.” The government says it will use the feedback to help modernize the legislation, which was created in 1975. The province plans to hold a series of targeted engagement sessions with housing experts, tenant groups, landlords and other stakeholders to ensure the new legislation is balanced and practical.
