Weather alerts in the Maritimes warn of more snow, freezing rain

Another round of snowy and icy weather is on its way to the Maritimes, making for a messy start to the Easter long weekend.

Nova Scotia

Special weather statements are in effect for Nova Scotia, except in southern areas of the province.

Environment Canada says snow, ice pellets and prolonged freezing rain is possible from Friday morning until the evening.

“Precipitation will begin as snow or ice pellets over southwestern Nova Scotia on Friday morning, reaching Cape Breton Island by Friday afternoon. Snow and ice pellets will transition through freezing rain to rain through the day,” the statement reads.

“Freezing rain warnings may be issued as confidence increases.”

New Brunswick

Special weather statements are also in place for the majority of New Brunswick.

Snow or ice pellets are expected to begin Friday morning.

The statement says the precipitation will then turn to freezing rain and rain over southern and central parts of the province in the afternoon.

The highest snowfall amounts are expected over northern New Brunswick, where yellow snowfall warnings are in effect and up to 30 cm is expected.

“Snow will develop Friday morning then change to ice pellets with a risk of freezing rain. The ice pellets will change to rain over Madawaska and Victoria Counties late in the afternoon,” the warning reads.

“Friday night, ice pellets and freezing rain will change to snow overnight before ending. Over Madawaska and Victoria Counties the rain will change to ice pellets and freezing rain and then snow Friday night.”

Prince Edward Island

Special weather statements are in effect across P.E.I.

Snow, ice pellets and freezing rain are also possible on Friday.

Environment Canada says the snow will begin in the morning before transitioning to ice pellets and freezing rain by the evening, then to rain overnight.

A prolonged period of freezing rain is also possible in the evening.
