P.E.I. joins Nova Scotia in removing U.S. alcohol from store shelves in response to tariffs

Atlantic Canada's premiers say they're united and are urging people to support local businesses in response to the tariffs imposed by the United States.

The Prince Edward Island government has announced its response to the 25 per cent tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump.

The province will take “immediate steps” to remove American products from liquor stores and limiting procurement with U.S.-based companies.

All American wines, beer, and spirits are set to be removed from provincial liquor store shelves by Tuesday, the same day the tariffs are set to come into effect.

The province also says it will be limiting commerce with U.S. companies wherever possible moving forward, including cancelling existing contracts.

“Our government is taking these initial, but important steps in reaction to the US governments unfair and unnecessary tariffs. Additional measures will be implementing in the coming days working with the Government of Canada and our local business community,” said Premier Dennis King in a provincial news release.

“Through these challenging times, our government will be there to support Island workers, businesses, and our broader community.”

The province’s minister of finance says it is essential people support and buy local.

“Our province and our country must stand together as we navigate these challenging economic times. Our government is committed to doing everything we can to support Island businesses in the days, weeks, and months ahead. These measures are an important first step in ensuring we stand by our local suppliers during this difficult time,” said Jill Burridge in the release.

The province says the PEI Liquor Control Commission purchased 16,345 cases of U.S. products last year, grossing approximately $7.38 million in sales.

Similar response from Nova Scotia

On Saturday, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston announced the province will direct the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation to remove all American alcohol from their shelves.

Houston added Nova Scotia would also will limit American business from provincial procurement and look for chances to cancel existing contracts, as well as double the toll cost for American commercial vehicles at the Cobequid Pass.

N.B. premier says tariffs will devastate workers

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt called Trump’s tariff an act that will “devastate New Brunswick and American workers, businesses, and the economy.”

In a statement issued to social media after a meeting with Canada’s premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Saturday, Holt wrote “it is time for Canada to stand strong and united against the threat of tariffs.”

“Our team will use every tool in our toolbox to defend and support New Brunswickers and put an end to these tariffs,” she added.

“It’s now more important than ever to build up our economy, buy local, and get to work seizing the opportunities we have across New Brunswick and our country.”

Trudeau has announced counter tariffs on $30 billion in American goods, primed to rise to $155 billion later this month.

He is expected to speak with Trump on Monday.
