Some Maritime schools closed Friday due to weather

A switch over from rain to ice pellets and then snow has cancelled some schools in the Maritimes Friday.

Temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark, making for slippery conditions.

Salt trucks are out in the Halifax area and highways and city streets are covered in snow.

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says the messy mix will clear for eastern areas of Nova Scotia by around 10 a.m. and people should be cautious of icy surfaces.

There are currently no weather alerts in effect.

School closures

Some schools in northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton are closed.

All schools on Prince Edward Island were originally on a one-hour delay. They later closed for the day.

Other closures

All provincial civil service offices across Prince Edward Island are on a delayed opening until 10 a.m.

Some Health PEI services delayed due to weather.

Travel

Wind conditions may result in traffic restrictions on the Confederation Bridge from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday.

Due to adverse weather conditions, Marine Atlantic anticipates potential schedule impacts to the following sailing on Friday:

• The 11:30 p.m. crossing from Port aux Basques, N.L., to North Sydney, N.S.

The following sailings on Saturday have been cancelled:

• The 11:15 p.m. crossing from North Sydney to Port aux Basques
• The 11:30 p.m. crossing from Port aux Basques to North Sydney
