HOUSTON -- A non-profit group that offers free shotguns and firearms training to residents of high-crime areas has made a Houston neighbourhood the site of its first gun giveaway.

Residents of the Oak Forest neighbourhood, which has been hit by a rash of burglaries and robberies, say they are grateful for the self-defence help.

Amid the ongoing national debate on gun control, the Houston-based Armed Citizen Project says it's trying to show that putting more guns in the hands of responsible owners can help combat crime.

But others say research has shown that more guns results in more gun-related deaths rather than less crime. Opinions among local officials are mixed.
